I’ve lived in the Langley, BC area most of my adult life. As a teenager, I would head to the Willowbrook Mall frequently with friends and even worked at Sport Chek for a season. However, with maturing and discovering the value of supporting local businesses I migrate not to the mall most days but to the little shops in Downtown Langley.
Last week we decided to check out some of the murals around the One Way in Downtown Langley. Even with living so close I had no idea that there was an actual walk that you could do. Did you?
I took a peek at the online pamphlet to see which murals we wanted to see the most. That way we knew where to park and which other local shops we could check out along the way. The first one we picked was this cute sunflower and cat one. Painted by artist Judy Pohl titled, “Our Green Laneway.” It felt like the perfect fall backdrop with the red brick and yellow sunflowers. This particular mural is located just up a ways from one of my favourite local businesses in that area, The Passionate Home.
Of course, I had to pop in to see all that has been put out for the Fall season.
THE PASSIONATE HOME
This local Downtown Langley business is owned by hobbyist turned entrepreneur, Carrie Thachuk.
Specializing in repurposing furniture with Annie Sloan chalk paint, The Passionate Home holds workshops to help you create something old into something beautiful and useful once again. Did you know you don’t need to prime or sand for almost most projects when using Annie Sloan paint?!? I had no idea.
Carrie also turned this two-story beautiful space into the perfect place to pop in to find the perfect unique gift.
We already picked out the mugs we are going to buy for each other for Christmas!
THE POWER OF WOMEN IS INFINITE
The next two murals we visited were the ones located just behind Forever Yours Lingerie. Ladies if you haven’t been to Forever Yours yet, you need to! The ladies there are phenomenal at helping you get the exact fit you need for your undergarments without making you feel like a ninny. You would be surprised how many women are wearing the wrong size bra.
It’s fitting that these two murals would be located behind this local business.
TEN THOUSAND VILLAGES
This is one of the gems that I had no idea was here until last year at the Arts Alive Festival which is held each summer in the One Way. It is one of our families favorite festivals to attend each year!
This local business focuses on giving back to those in other parts of the world that need education and empowerment. Each item sold from fair-trade tea and coffee to pottery and even children’s books and toys go directly to those that make it or to a village in need.
This mural is located just beside Ten Thousand Villages in the alley.
STOP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS
One of the last murals we visited was this one located near Sugar’d eco-sweet Hair Removal. I have many friends who choose this local business for all their hair removal needs. Sugaring paste is warm and never hot. It only adheres to hair and dead skin which makes it safer than waxing. It also eliminates irritation after a hair removal session. The sugar paste they use is all natural you could eat it!
THE LOCAL SPACE
The last stop in the Downtown Langley area that I made was to my top small business shop in the area, The Local Space. Currently, they are located on Fraser Hwy a block from Scoop N’ Save. However, they will be moving into the One Way area on December 1st of this year!
Why is this local Downtown Langley shop my top favorite? Well, because it carries almost ALL of my loved small shop items in one place. It gives me a chance to go in and see the products like the new K’Pure Naturals Tofino inspired line. They also carry Só Luxury, Pink House Organics highlighter stick, Little and Lively and Smash + Tess. It’s the perfect way to still support my local boss babes and save on shipping!
The other reason for my love of this shop is the little play table for children. I really wish that more shops would have something like this. It makes for a much better shopping experience as a parent or caregiver. Get on it Langley shops!
Now for the part, I have been dying to share for weeks! The Downtown Langley Business Association is giving ONE lucky follower on Instagram $100 in Downtown Dollars. Downtown dollars can be used at MANY of the local Downtown Langley businesses including all the ones I mentioned in this post. Treat yourself to a massage at Simply Spa, pick up some fresh seafood from 1 Fish 2 Fish Market, or go thrifting at my favorite thrift shop, Missions Thrift Langley.
To enter head to my Instagram page and find the picture below. Follow the instructions there! Good Luck!! I would love to know if you have a favorite local shop in the Downtown Langley area?
