Do you want to know how many times it took me to switch to natural deodorant? Four times, four. Are you thinking to yourself, “Why so many times, Shannon?” Well, I’ll tell you with just one word, DETOX.
Our bodies absorb everything that we put on it. This means that when we use a deodorant or makeup on that has chemicals in it our skin is sucking that all in. In terms of our armpits, it creates a colossal build up. I had NO idea when I first started the switch a few years ago. Once I switched everything seemed like it was going fine and dandy until about a week in. Then, the STINK came.
Yes, you will go through a period of time where your body now has the opportunity to breathe again. It releases all that it was holding in and starts unclogging. This is your detox and you need to put your big girl panties on, be BRAVE and push through it. The things that are the hardest usually come with the biggest payoff.
Here are a few tips to help you get the courage up to go through the stinky detox.
Find Your Natural Deodorant
The first brand that I tried was Tom’s. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great. After Tom’s I tried the one from LUSH. I actually liked that one a lot but it was harsh on my skin. And when I started to go through the detox my smell plus the smell of the bar didn’t mesh well.
Finally, on my last attempt to make the switch I found THE natural deodorant for me. Get Closer from K’Pure Naturals has been my top choice. She has three different formulas. The original formula, Lavender/Vanilla and one that is baking soda-free for a gentler touch. Each are $14 +tax. I find that it lasts me quite a long time, a little goes a long way.
Speed Up the Process
Each detox period is unique to each person. For some, it might only take a few weeks to get through it where others, like myself, it will take about three months. Again you have to be BRAVE to get through it. Seriously, It’s hard walking around stinking up the place. Kidding, not kidding.
There are ways that you can help the process along. Drink lots of water. You can use apple cider vinegar on a cotton ball as well. Rub it over your armpits and let dry. Do this daily to notice a difference. Or what I do is K’Pure has another product that can help.
The dead sea mud masque called Clean Up is a great way to help speed up the detox. This masque will aid to draw out the toxins left by antiperspirant. It will also balance pH levels. I’ve been using this twice a week. I’m finding that my hormones are changing since after having Maggie and my body is going through some changes and I need a little extra help.
Know What To Expect
The reason why I failed so many times was that I had no idea about the detox period. If I had known before I started I think I would have been successful the first time. When I started to stink I figured the deodorant just wasn’t working for me and I’ve heard the same from others as well. You also may experience other symptoms like a rash and irritation. This is mostly due to the transition period but it could be that you need a formula with no baking soda.
Be straight up with people. It’s not like you will be holding your arms up and waving the stink around so don’t worry too much. However, if you want to give people a heads up feel free to. Most people will understand. You are doing this for your health. Antiperspirant is horrible for your body. I’m willing to let a few people feel a bit uncomfortable with my smell if it means I’m making a healthier choice for my body.
I ended up making the swap in the summertime. It’s hotter and you sweat more but I found that because I was outside it helped my transition. In a way, I sweated it out. I felt way less embarrassed because I was outside and not in a closed room.
Those are my little tidbits from a mama who failed three times until finally making it permanent. Trust me it was hard the fourth time around but knowing what to expect helped. I hope it does for you as well.
This post is not sponsored by K’Pure Naturals. I honestly love their products especially the natural deodorant. I have been using these products for over a year now and enjoy sharing what I love with you all.
Let me know in the comments if you have tried switching before. What was your experience? What keeps you from switching? Let’s chat!
